Summer

The town of Valemount, the valley in the mountains, is a small, friendly town with a lot to offer for outdoor recreation and sightseeing.

Summer activities in the shadow of Mt. Robson are very much like our national parks, with some very significant exceptions; much less regulation, and far fewer people. So if you are looking for guided or structured recreational activities or if you just want pristine wilderness with no company……try the Robson Valley.

HIKING

Hiking

Probably the most common activity sought by most travelers is walking. Walking or hiking from minutes to hours on either a well developed trail system or just rambling the alpine is mental therapy for most. The grade of trail varies to provide both strenuous or casual walking. For those that want intensive interpretation along the route guided trips are available. The trail system in Valemount area is managed by the British Columbia Forest Service at Mt. Robson The trails or routes in the Provincial Forests see very few tracks each season, although the routes that utilize public huts can see larger numbers.

The advantage to walking the forests adjacent to the National Parks is largely one of remoteness or seclusion. For the traveler with less time or ability to get to the more remote sites, helicopter hiking is available. This guided activity allows you to burn all your energy in the alpine viewing the flowers, wildlife and valley below.

Rafting

Rafting experiences operate mainly on the Fraser River, 15 minutes from Valemount. Although one operator does provide advanced white-water experiences on the Canoe ( previous experience mandatory). White water excursions on the Fraser entail approximately two hours of water time with a portage. All the necessary equipment is supplied, and the trip encounters class three waters. During August and September the spawning salmon can be seen during the trip.

Gentle or flat water floats are also available on the Fraser that cater to people of all ages. No paddling is required and the trip is suitable for most anyone, please inquire at the Mt. Robson Info Center, Valemount Info or at the Dream Catcher Inn.
